One of the most common questions we hear at Southern Painting is, “How much paint will I need for my project?” While every space is unique, there are general guidelines to help you calculate the amount of paint required for your walls, ceilings, and trims.
In this guide, we’ll break down how to determine the right quantity of paint based on the dimensions of your space.
Step 1: Measure the Room
Accurate measurements are the foundation of a proper paint estimate. Here’s how to measure your space:
- Measure the Walls
- Use a tape measure to find the height and width of each wall.
- Multiply the height by the width to find the area of each wall.
- Add up the total to get the square footage.
- Account for Windows and Doors
- Measure the dimensions of windows and doors.
- Subtract their combined area from the total square footage of the walls.
- Ceilings (If Painting)
- Measure the length and width of the ceiling.
- Multiply to find the square footage.
Step 2: Understand Paint Coverage
Most paints cover about 350–400 square feet per gallon, but this can vary depending on:
- Paint Quality: Higher-quality paints often have better coverage, requiring fewer coats.
- Surface Type: Rough or porous surfaces absorb more paint and may need extra coats.
- Color Change: Drastic color changes, like dark to light, typically require additional coats for full coverage.
Step 3: Calculate How Much Paint You’ll Need
Now that you know the total square footage and paint coverage, you can estimate the amount of paint required:
- Walls
Divide the total square footage of the walls by the paint’s coverage per gallon.- Example: If your walls total 800 square feet and the paint covers 400 square feet per gallon, you’ll need 2 gallons for one coat.
- Ceilings
Use the same method as walls to calculate ceiling paint needs. - Trim and Doors
Paint for trim and doors typically covers 400–500 linear feet per gallon. Measure the length of the trim and use the manufacturer’s coverage guidelines.
Example Calculation
Let’s say you’re painting a 12×12 room with 8-foot-high walls and one window and door:
- Total wall area: 12 x 8 x 4 walls = 384 square feet.
- Subtract window (15 sq. ft.) and door (21 sq. ft.): 384 – 36 = 348 sq. ft.
- Paint needed for one coat: 348 ÷ 400 = ~0.87 gallons.
For two coats, double the amount: ~1.75 gallons.
If you’re painting the ceiling (12 x 12 = 144 sq. ft.):
- Ceiling paint needed for one coat: 144 ÷ 400 = ~0.36 gallons.
Adding trim: If the room has 40 linear feet of trim, one gallon should be enough for two coats.
Additional Factors to Consider
- Primer
- If you’re painting over a dark color or a heavily stained surface, you may need a primer.
- Some paints come as a paint-and-primer combination, but heavily pigmented surfaces might still require a separate primer coat.
- Extra Paint for Touch-Ups
Always round up your estimate slightly to account for touch-ups or mistakes. - Texture and Porosity
Textured walls or porous materials, like bare drywall, absorb more paint and may require additional coats. - Color and Sheen
Bold or vibrant colors and higher-sheen finishes may need extra coats for even coverage.
